HIV/AIDS Courses
SCHD
offers a number of HIV/AIDS courses designed to meet the requirements of
health professionals and others who may come in contact with the virus.
Information about the individual classes may be found below, and the
current course schedule may be downloaded above.
HIV/AIDS 104
-
Meets educational requirements for
nurses, cosmologists, massage therapists, and other health care and
human service professionals.

Continuing education credits are
not offered. However, a certificate is provided which
documents Department of Health requirements having been met.

Four-hour course is offered monthly at
SCHD, 2200 Ringling Blvd, Sarasota.

Free for participants from
not-for-profit agencies. For others there is a $10 charge.
HIV/AIDS 500
-
A prerequisite for those who
anticipate taking the HIV/AIDS 501 course.
-
This course focuses on counseling and
AIDS testing issues.
-
An exam is given at the end of this
four-hour course, with 80% accuracy required to pass.
HIV/AIDS 501
-
This course focuses on client-centered
counseling, testing, partner counseling, and referrals.

Three-day intense workshop designed to
train counselors to conduct effective pretest and post-test
counseling for the HIV antibody test and meets the 19-hour
requirement set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Continuing education credits are
available for nurses, social workers, marriage and family
therapists, and licensed mental health counselors.

The HIV/AIDS 500 course is a mandatory
prerequisite to this workshop.

The course is free for participants
from non-profits agencies. For all others there is a charge of
$50 to cover the cost of materials.
HIV/AIDS 501 Update

501 Update is a three-hour course for
Health Department staff, volunteers, and community agency staff
conducting HIV pretest and post-test counseling at confidential and
anonymous testing sites.

Participants are updated on changing
technical, medical, and legal information regarding HIV testing and
HIV disease.

This course is free of charge.
