Health Promotion Community Campaigns

These campaigns are designed to inform the public on health issues and to help people make healthier choices in their lifestyles.  Our campaigns address health issues such as substance abuse, physical inactivity, rabies prevention, and breast cancer screening awareness.  Current projects include:

  • Step up, Florida!, a month-long celebration in February recognizing the importance of physical activity and raising awareness about physical activity opportunities in your community.

  • Believe in All Your Possibilities, designed to help prevent alcohol and tobacco use in youth through prevention theater, social events, and school-based programming

  • VERBtm Sarasota, designed to increase physical activity in 9-13 year olds

  • Pathways to Health, providing a series of easy-to-access, safe walking paths for the public.

Academic Health Department

The Academic Health Department is a collaboration in teaching, research, and service between the Sarasota County Health Department, researchers, individuals, and educators such as University of South Florida's College of Public Health.  Internships are available in a number of different sections of the Health Department.

DOH Injury Liaison

In 2003, the Office of Injury Prevention was established within the Division of Health Access and Tobacco to raise the level of awareness of the injury burden in Florida and to establish injury as a priority within the Department of Health (DOH).  In 2004, the Florida legislature recognized the need for a comprehensive statewide injury prevention program to support state and community health systems.  A Health Promotion staff person serves as the liaison between SCHD and this state office.
