Public
Places
Sarasota County Health Department conducts
inspections of certain types of businesses, organizations, and other
public places to ensure their compliance
with laws and regulations regarding health and sanitation. These
include:
▪ Body
piercing/tattoo salons. These establishments must comply with
Chapter 64E-19, Florida Administrative Code. This code outlines minimum
requirements for body piercing establishments, including cleaning and
sterilization of instruments and jewelry, piercing procedures, injury
reporting, customer and other facility records, infection control
training for piercers, and informed consent issues for minors under the
age of 18. Body piercers must successfully complete a State of
Florida-approved certification course before applying for an annual
license. Body piercing establishments may obtain a temporary license for
special events that do not exceed 14 days.
▪
Food establishments.
Food establishments are monitored
by SCHD to ensure safety and sanitary conditions. Establishments
regulated include: bars and lounges; child care facilities; civic,
fraternal, and religious organizations; detention facilities; schools
and institutions. Safe food, safe food preparation, and food handling
consultation are provided. Restaurants are inspected by the
Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulations.
▪
Group care facilities.
Inspections are completed regularly
by SCHD for group care facilities such as: adult family care homes,
assisted living facilities, child care facilities, crisis stabilization
units, developmentally disabled residences, hospice residences,
residential drug treatment centers, and transitional living facilities.
▪
Public pools & spas.
SCHD's division of Environmental Health Services regulates the
construction, modification, and maintenance of all commercial bathing
places in Sarasota County. This includes pools, spas, wading pools, and
interactive water features at parks, schools, health clubs, and any
facility consisting of five or more living units. Inspections are
conducted twice a year and water samples for bacterial analysis are
collected four times a year.
Environmental Health Services also
offers a pool operator's certification course four times a year, which
covers basic information on pool chemistry, filtration, code
requirements, water born diseases, and algae control. All commercial
pool service personnel or a representative of the bathing place must be
certified in Sarasota County. Call (941) 861-6675 for more
information.
▪
Tanning Salons.
These facilities are regulated under Chapter 64E-17, Florida
Administrative Code. All tanning equipment (beds and booths) are
inspected twice a year. Tanning salon operators must successfully
complete a State of Florida approved certification course before
applying for an annual license.
Public
Resources
SCHD inspects certain
public resources, including:
▪
Beach water.
Beach water samples are collected
by SCHD every week at 16 different beach sites in Sarasota County. The
water samples are analyzed for enterococci and fecal coliform bacteria.
High concentrations of these bacteria may indicate the presence of
microorganisms that could cause disease, infections, or rashes. Health
advisories or warnings are issued if these conditions are confirmed.
▪
Public drinking water systems & private
wells
