Biomedical waste & needle disposal
▪ Biomedical waste
disposal
SCHD, through the
Florida Department
of Health, has primary authority and responsibility for facilities
that generate, transport, store, or treat biomedical waste. These
include hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, laboratories, funeral homes,
dentists, veterinarians, physicians, tattooists, and body piercers.
The objective of the biomedical waste
program is to protect public health. When biomedical waste is improperly
managed, it places health care workers, sanitation workers and the
general public at risk for contracting an infectious disease.
Chapter 64E-16, Florida Administrative
Code, requires facilities that generate, transport, store, or treat
biomedical waste to obtain a biomedical waste permit.
▪
Needle disposal (Sharps Program)
Needles or lancets should never be placed
in the garbage or in a recycling bin. SCHD's Sharps Program
provides individuals a no-cost, safe, and legal way to dispose of
syringes, needles, and lancets. Businesses are prohibited from using
this public service program.
Program participants can pick up and
return medical waste containers at the
SCHD Main Office,
SCHD Environmental Services Center
(Sarasota),
SCHD Environmental Services Center
(Venice), and these other locations.
Emergency Operation Planning
SCHD coordinates its health and human
services with other local and state providers to ensure that the
community's health and human services needs are met in the event of an
emergency, such as a hurricane.
Sarasota County health partners include
hospitals, nursing homes/assisted living facilities, hospice, the
medical examiner, funeral homes, dialysis centers, pharmacies, and
medical laboratories.
Other agencies work with SCHD in the
Sarasota Community Organizations Active in Disaster (Sarasota COAD).
Sarasota COAD agencies
collaborate to serve vulnerable populations, such as the frail elderly,
the physically disabled, those with behavioral and mental health
disorders, and at-risk youth and families.
Other Emergency Planning partners include
Sarasota County Emergency Services, the
School Board of Sarasota County, and state health & human services
agencies.

School
Health Services
SCHD offers comprehensive School Health
Services to all students enrolled in public and charter schools.
School Health Services also ensures private school students meet
state-mandated requirements for immunizations, physical examinations,
and growth and development screenings.
▪
Registered Nurses
A registered nurse is assigned
to one or more public and charter schools in Sarasota County. The
primary responsibilities of the nurse are to oversee each school’s
health program and medication administration procedures and to work with
parents and teachers of children with special medical needs. They also
educate students and the school staff about living a healthy lifestyle.
The nurse follows up on deviations in screening results or student
health records. Registered nurses are available to private schools for
health education lessons, student health consultations, and to train
health room staff.
▪
Clerical Staff
School Health clerical staff persons assist the nurses with
state-mandated growth and development screenings, review student health
data to ensure compliance with Florida statutes, and provide training on
computerized health systems to health room staff.
▪

If you need a certified copy of a Birth
Certificate for school registration, you can purchase one at the office
