Further Information & Frequent Questions
Resources:
Is there a cost to get the vaccine?
The vaccine is provided free from the federal government. The
cost for health department staff to administer the vaccine is also being
covered by the federal government. This is why the Sarasota County
Health Department is providing the vaccine at no cost. Private
providers are able to charge an administrative fee to cover their costs
for staffing and supplies as they are not receiving federal funds for
administration costs.
Who should receive the vaccine?
Everyone is encouraged to get the H1N1 vaccine, which is now available to all Sarasota County residents older than six months of age. Groups that are at higher risk for influenza or influenza-related complications, are likely to come in contact with influenza viruses as part of their occupation and could transmit influenza viruses to others in medical care settings, or are close contacts of infants aged <6 months (who are too young to be vaccinated). Those groups include:
-
Pregnant women,
-
Persons who live with or provide care for
infants aged <6 months (e.g., parents, siblings, and daycare
providers),
-
Health-care and emergency medical services
personnel as defined in the MMWR (http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr58e0821a1.htm)
-
Persons aged 6 months-24 years, and
-
Persons aged 25-64 years who have medical conditions (such as
asthma, heart disease, or cancer) that put them
at high risk for developing flu-related complications
Who should not be vaccinated?
Some
people should not be vaccinated without first consulting a physician.
They include:
-
People who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs.
-
People who have had a severe reaction to an influenza
vaccination in the past.
-
People who developed Guillian-Barré
syndrome (GBS) within
6 weeks of getting an influenza vaccine previously.
-
Children less than 6 months of age
(influenza vaccine is not approved for use in this age group).
-
People who have a moderate or severe
illness with a fever should wait to get vaccinated until their
symptoms lessen.
If you have questions about whether you should get
a flu vaccination, consult your healthcare provider.
